White River Junction Post 84’s hopes for hosting a Vermont American Legion baseball quarterfinal are drying up, even as the squad finds itself in the driver’s seat for the postseason. Post 84 dropped a pair of games to Brattleboro Post 5 on Thursday at Natowich Field. Brattleboro rallied from a three-run deficit for an 8-7 win in the completion of a game suspended by weather on July 15. Post 5 then followed with a 3-2 victory in Thursday’s regularly scheduled contest. WRJ (7-6) held a 7-4 lead through four innings when the first game was stopped last week. Southern Division-leader Brattleboro (12-4) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth, then used a two-run seventh for a walk-off win.

Bulletin Board: Valley Storm edged in finals of Coaches Classic >Published: 7/11/2021 7:32:07 PM Hannah Gilbert had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs, but the Valley Storm 14U softball team fell one run short in the title game of the Coaches Classic on Sunday. The Storm fell to CT Diamond Club, 9-8, in the championship game played Sunday at Murphy Park. Margarette Howland and Delaney Fifield each had two hits in the title game for the Storm, and Maggie Fay drove in a pair of runs. The Valley Storm got into Sunday’s final thanks to a 19-4 win over the Vermont Storm in the quarterfinal round and a 7-5 win over the NEK Tri-Force in the semis.

Both teams’ offenses came out hot, each scoring three runs in the first inning. Brownlee drew the start for Manchester, tossing three and two thirds innings, allowing four runs. Joey McCoy pitched in relief, ultimately drawing the win in his three and a third innings of work. McCoy pitched a great game, allowing one unearned run. Sam Steinman drove in two runs on two hits and Will Addington added two hits himself to lead the Manchester bats.
