As Memorial Day fast approaches, I became quite curious as to its origins so I did a little research that I thought interesting enough to share.
As many of my generation know, Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day. It originated immediately following the Civil War but actually did not become an official U.S. holiday until 1971.

Immediately post-Civil War, Americans began going to cemeteries and decorating graves with flowers. Sadly, the United States had to establish national cemeteries because the Civil War took the lives of 750,000 Americans or 2 percent of the national population at that time. In 1868, General John Logan, leader of an organization for northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance on May 30, choosing precisely that date because it was not the anniversary of any battle in the war. ....

Westchester, Rockland schools ranked highly by U.S. News and World Report


Twenty-five high schools in the Lower Hudson Valley rank among the top 100 in New York state, according to U.S. News and World Report s annual rankings.
Bronxville High School ranked highest in the region, No. 13 in New York and No. 145 in the nation. It is the highest-ranking high school in the state outside of New York City. Edgemont (14), Byram Hills (18) and Rye (19) also made the top 20 out more than 1,200 schools.
Nanuet High School staked Rockland County s place in the top 100, ranking No. 96. The top-ranking high school in Putnam County is Haldane High School, coming in at No. 125.
Townsend Harris High School in Queens maintained its 2020 spot as the No. 1 high school in New York. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia, kept its ranking as the top high school in the country. ....

My mother, my dream and Mama Rose


My mother, Lily, was born in 1911 on a dining room table in the Bronx. She would live through World War I, the Spanish Flu, Women’s Suffrage, the Roaring Twenties, the Stock Market Crash, the Great Depression, and World War II before she was 30. She took her final bow on June 23, 2014 at over 103 years
young. During the more-than-six decades that Lily and I were figuring us out, expectations for women were transformed again and again by the women’s movement, the sexual revolution, and the subsequent mandate for women to “have it all.”
In my career, now in its 50th year, one of the roles I had the good fortune to play, in what I believe to be one of the best musicals ever written, is Rose, in Arthur Laurents, Julie Styne, and Stephen Sondheim’s “Gypsy.” ....

What are the best high schools in New York state? U.S. News and World Report has released its 2021 rankings of nearly 24,000 public high schools nationwide, including 1,281 schools in the Empire State.
