2020 was not the year I wrote my first book but it was the year I started thinking about it. And in typical freelance writer fashion, I decided to take advantage of my position and get some advice on how to go about it from people much more accomplished than me under the guise of researching this article. Here’s what I managed to learn.
A Way to Take Notes
Apparently books don’t spring fully formed from the ether. You kind of have to work on them, brainstorming different ideas, doing research, and taking notes before you can really get started. News to me, but oh well.
Dark Matter, and is the showrunner for
Utopia Falls. But Powder Mage takes him in a new direction the series, which starts with McClellan’s debut novel,
Promise of Blood, is set in a fantastical world where powder mages get their abilities from gunpowder. Reviewing the first book, Tor.com’s Stefan Raets said it “seems to be aimed straight at the same readers who enjoy Brandon Sanderson’s novels.”
Here’s the publisher’s summary of the first book:

Robin title will focus on the Damian Wayne version of the character as the young hero attempts to prove himself as the greatest fighter in the DC Universe by taking part in the deadly League of Lazarus tournament. But first, he needs to locate the secret island on which the tournament is being held. The release promises a new supporting cast, brand new characters, and fights, lots of fights!
Readers can get psyched for the new book with a two-part Demon or Detective prequel arc set within the pages of
Batman #106 (out Tuesday, March 2) and
