Two DC police officers who responded to the US Capitol insurrection have died by suicide, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
“Officer Gunther Hashida, assigned to the Emergency Response Team within the Special Operations Division, was found deceased in his residence on Thursday, July 29,” department spokesperson Kristen Metzger told CNN in a statement.
“We are grieving as a Department and our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends,” Metzger said.
Metropolitan Police Officer Kyle DeFreytag was found dead on July 10, according to department public information officer Sean Hickman.
Officials confirmed on Monday that another Washington, D.C. police officer who responded to the Jan. 6 riot at the capitol died by suicide. Officer Gunther Hashida, 43, was found dead at his home last Thursday. He is the third police officer who responded to the Capitol attack to die by suicide.
Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Brianna Burch said: “We are grieving as a department as our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends.” Hashida joined the Metropolitan Police Department in May 2003 and was assigned to the emergency response team within the special operations division at the time of his death. This is the third known suicide of a police officer who responded to the attack on the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith and U.S. Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood also responded to the Capitol riot and later died by suicide.
More than 500 people so far have been charged with crimes stemming from the Jan. 6 riot, even as Trump allies try to downplay the incident.
