Improving the well-being of host and refugee communities in Maraach, Lebanon
Format
Maraach, Bourj Hammoud, Lebanon, 19 February 2021 - UN-Habitat, funded by Polish Aid, is providing support in several areas to improve living conditions in the overcrowded neighbourhood of Maraach in Lebanon’s Bourj Hammoud town.
Maraach, one of the most densely populated areas in the Middle East, has some 6,000 residents composed of roughly 60 per cent vulnerable Lebanese and 40 per cent Syrian refugees and other nationalities. Residents face many challenges including poverty, limited access to water and electricity; few safe, accessible public spaces; exposed unsafe electrical wiring and run-down buildings and common spaces which were badly damaged by the Beirut Port explosion last year.

On January 27, 2021, Ambassador Jacek BazaÅski, at the invitation of the Kenya Office of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), visited Mukuru kwa Njenga - an informal settlement located on the outskirts of Nairobi, inhabited by a community of around 120 000 people. It is one of several such places in the capital of Kenya, whose inhabitants received food support financed by Polish Aid in 2020.
Polish contribution in the amount of nearly 117 000 USD, summed up with the funds donated to the same project by Finland, Sweden and the United States, allowed the WFP to implement two projects in the informal settlements in the capital of Kenya: direct cash transfers to most needy families, as well as nutrition support for children up to 5 years of age suffering from malnutrition, pregnant and lactating women and the elderly. Within both of these projects, the WFP has reached over a quarter of a million beneficiaries.

Faced with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Redemptoris Missio Humanitarian Aid Foundation adapted and expanded the Holy Family Children Centre and the adjacent health centre in Kithatu, Meru County, Kenya. The aim of the project implemented there in 2020 was to help protect the facilities’ patients and staff from infection.
Like the rest of the world, Kenya is struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic. Fighting the virus on the African continent is particularly difficult. Health services are underfunded and lack basic equipment as well as qualified personnel. Following basic hygiene rules vital for COVID-19 prevention is a challenge, too. Access to clean water, bathrooms, toilets, disinfectants, and personal hygiene products is scarce. It is also difficult to keep social distance and respect the movement ban while most of the society earn their living through jobs that require movement and intensive people-to-people contacts (such as selling products
