Demand on hospitals reaches new highs as Simcoe Muskoka COVID-19 cases climb

BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) reports 56 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, for a total of 322 so far this week. There are 942 active cases across the region, with 29 infected people in hospitals, a 35 per cent increase over the holiday period. ICU bed occupancy across Simcoe Muskoka sits at 67 per cent. We have resources that are stretched now, says Collingwood General and Marine Hospital s Dr. Michael Lisi. We had to open up our alternate health facility just to keep up with demand for our beds. We are particularly concerned about the number of new cases being diagnosed through our COVID assessment centre in the community because every increase in those numbers is going to result in more hospital and ICU admissions in January.

Simcoe Muskoka logs 269 new COVID-19 cases, plus two deaths

BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reports an alarming 269 new positive COVID-19 cases, 76 of those in Barrie. The numbers listed Tuesday reflect positive tests since Friday. The region s death toll is on the rise as the health unit reports two more people have lost their lives with COVID-19. There are currently 895 active cases, including 28 who are hospitalized. The SMDHU s website states the increase in case levels are twice the province s red level and that our ability to control case growth is still precarious. Modelling indicates area hospitals could become overwhelmed as cases surge. Under all scenarios, ICU occupancy will be above 300 beds within 10 days. Worst-case scenarios show occupancy above 1,500 beds by mid-January, SMDHU states.

School boards told to prepare for remote learning after winter break

BARRIE, ONT. Education Minister Stephen Lecce told school board chairs to encourage staff and students to bring essential learning materials home over the holidays. In his Tuesday memo, Lecce said that the precaution would help the education system be ready for all scenarios. He says the government is eyeing an increase in hospitalizations and ICU admissions from COVID-19. The public health environment in Ontario continues to evolve rapidly. The government is continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation, including recent trends in hospitalizations and intensive care unit patients, Lecce said. There are seven schools in Simcoe County with active outbreaks as of Thursday, including a new outbreak at St. Mary s Catholic School in Barrie.
