Tuesday, March 23 will mark the anniversary of the first national lockdown ordered by the Prime Minister as the country faced its initial wave of the deadly virus. In a televised national address, Mr Johnson solemnly informed the country of his decision to close all shops and restaurants and to ask people to stay at home. A total of 335 people had lost their lives to the virus by that stage.

Both secondary and primary schools will welcome back millions of pupils from Monday. The Prime Minister said that the resumption of school was an important first step towards a sense of normality. Secondary heads plan to phase the return of school years over the first week, allowing for essential testing procedures to be put in place.

Monday marks the first step out of lockdown, as schools across the country get ready to welcome back pupils. All school years are expected back in class, with attendance mandatory. However, secondary schools have been told that they can stagger the return of school years over the first week - to allow for Covid testing.

The Government intends to relax its work from home message from June 21 and will introduce new flexi-tickets to help persuade people to return to their places of work. These can be used two to three times a week and will save commuters hundreds of pounds. The Prime Minister is keen to get workers back to their offices in order to help revive the high street economy, which has been devastated by the pandemic.
Data is showing the vaccines are sufficiently effective in reducing hospitalizations and deaths.
Infection rates do not risk putting unsustainable pressure on the NHS.
The risk assessment is not changed by new Variants of Concern.
The Government will also outline the four-step plan of the lifting of the current rules, including the reopening of schools on March 8 and outdoor sports on March 29.
It is expected that there will be five weeks between each of the steps in order for the Government to check what impact the lifting of the rules is having on infection and hospitalisation levels.
