Saved by helmet, Madden to speak on bicycle safety

Cristin Madden says a bicycle helmet saved her life. Now the Bonita Springs resident hopes to encourage others to ride safely. She will share her message as the guest speaker at Bonita Springs’ first Bike Safety Day.
Madden and Debra Purcaro were bicycle riding in Alva on March 14 when a hit and run driver killed Purcano and severely injured Madden.
“Helmets save lives,” Madden said. “I am living proof of that. Visibility is very important, making you visible to drivers and making sure they see you.”
Madden’s other message is a lesser known lesson. She said people often think it’s the busy roads that are the most dangerous and the ones where cyclists need to take the most precautions. Madden’s encounter with a hit and run driver illustrates that isn’t true.

When six local heroes received the prestigious Phoenix Award on Wednesday, it wasn’t about the honor or the certificate. It was about getting the word out to the public that they too can save lives.
Five Bonita Bay employees and one bystander were honored by the Bonita Springs Fire Department for saving the life of a man that was going into cardiac arrest on March 10. All six had been trained in CPR and in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). They used that knowledge to save Rob White.

The Bonita Springs Historical Society is providing a series of educational and entertainment history walks downtown.
Your family can make reservations to meet Max the iguana, see demonstrations and ancient artifacts.
The history walks start on Jan. 6 and run through March.
There will be lessons on the walk about the “Mighty Calusa” who ruled Southwest Florida, including their contact with the Spanish starting in 1513.
