We have the votes : Senate advances Biden s $1 2 trillion infrastructure deal

By Haris Alic and Mica Soellner - The Washington Times - Wednesday, July 28, 2021 The Senate voted to advance President Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure package on Wednesday, only hours after a bipartisan group of lawmakers finalized the deal.  In a 67-32 vote, the chamber advanced the bill in a crucial test vote. The legislation cleared the 60-vote hurdle with 17 Republicans joining all 50 Senate Democrats. The pace was quicker than the usually plodding Senate as lawmakers prepared to leave Washington for a month-long summer break. “I’ve said for weeks that we intend to move two things in July,” Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said of the infrastructure bill and a $3.5 trillion package of social welfare programs.

Peter DeFazio threatens to wreck infrastructure bill unless demands are met

Mr. DeFazio and 30 other Democrats reiterated their intention on Wednesday in a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer. “This is not just a question of a fair process for members on our side of the Capitol,” the lawmakers wrote. “We should reject any effort to categorically exclude the thorough, transparent and transformational process undertaken by the House.” That position is shared by most senior House Democrats, who are bristling at the notion of being cut out of a major legislative deal after waiting years to see their party capture both Congress and the White House.

New infrastructure deal must focus on climate, activists say

WASHINGTON — Climate activists and their Democratic allies in Congress are pressing with renewed urgency for huge investments to slow global warming, after a bipartisan infrastructure plan cut out some of President Joe Biden’s key climate initiatives. Supporters say a larger, Democratic-only package now being developed in Congress must meet Biden’s promise to move the country toward carbon-free electricity, make America a global leader in electric vehicles and create millions of jobs in solar, wind and other clean- energy industries. But passage of a larger, multitrillion-dollar bill faces significant hurdles, even if Democrats use a procedural method that requires only a simple majority. It’s far from certain, in an evenly divided Senate, that moderate Democrats will agree to an expansive measure that could swell to as high as $6 trillion.
