One casualty of a moment in American life when politics seems to pervade everything is an inability by many prominent people to tease apart what is and is not a matter of politics.
The second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, which gets under way today, offers several prime examples. As the refrain went during Trump’s first impeachment, in 2019 and early 2020, the impeachment process is political and not legal, even though it resembles a criminal trial. Yet in both the Democratic House managers’ case for prosecution and (more seriously) the defense brief from Trump’s attorneys, there is a confusion between matters that are appropriately legal or factual, and those that are political.

January 6 Was Just One Day in a Sustained Campaign
The impeachment trial offers a chance to show how Donald Trump tried to undermine the election’s legitimacy for months not just on the day of the Capitol attack.

A risk exists that the Senate impeachment trial will focus too narrowly on the events of January 6, which culminated in the attack on the Capitol. As horrific as that day was, the broader picture cannot be allowed to slip from view: Donald Trump’s sustained, relentless efforts to propagate the myth that the election was stolen, including his attempts to recruit state and federal officials to embrace that myth and take action based on it.
From all indications, the failure of state provides the platform for the likes of Sunday Igboho, writes Shola Oyeyipo
If not until recently, Chief Adeniyi Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho was little known in the South-west, but after he lent himself to protecting the Yoruba nation from the untamed invading killer herders terrorizing parts of Nigeria, he has become a household name.
The people of the West are elated that in the absence of adequate protection by security agencies, one of their own is taking up the challenge of telling the killers “enough is enough.” He gave the Fulani killer herdsmen a quit notice in Yorubaland.
But Speaking on Tuesday, Igboho urged Ojodu to stop peddling falsehood against him, otherwise, he would take legal action against him.
Ojudu had, in a post that went viral on the social media, narrated how a former governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, held a secret meeting with Igboho in 2009 ahead of the rerun-election that brought in Dr. Kayode Fayemi as Ekiti State governor.
Ojudu stated that Igboho told Tinubu that he had been paid by the PDP to disrupt the re-run governorship poll.
The presidential aide also said Igboho agreed to meet with them on the condition that the late strongman of Ibadan politics, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, who died in 2008, must not know about the meeting.
