PASS Readies For Trotting Sophomores | Standardbred Canada

Trotting sophomores will be in the spotlight this weekend at the eastern Pennsylvania tracks, with the fillies in PA Sire Stakes and Stallion Series action at Harrah’s Philly on Friday (May 21), and the colts and geldings at Pocono Saturday (May 22) for Pennsylvania All-Stars events. This is the first coming-together for the state-sired fillies, and most of last year’s top-rated misses will be on hand along with one noted newcomer: Bella Bellini. Bella Bellini is in probably the toughest of the three Sires Stakes divisions, Race 8, but she’s ready for her test as she comes in off of three victories in 1:54 or better for driver Dexter Dunn and trainer Nifty Norman. There is no shortage of talented challengers, including Love Muffin, coming off a 1:53 qualifier at The Meadowlands; Flawless Country, last year’s Sire Stakes champion; and Lady Chaos, the Breeders Crown champion for this group in 2020.

Daley Admires Anoka Attitude | Standardbred Canada

Anoka Hanover might not have been the hardest working horse in harness racing last season, but as far as Dan Patch Award-winning two-year-old trotters over a span of almost 25 years, she was nearly at the top. The Noel Daley-trained Anoka Hanover won 10 of 14 starts in 2020 and captured the Dan Patch Award for best two-year-old trotting filly. Going back to 1997 only one two-year-old Dan Patch Award winning trotter female or male exceeded 13 races: the filly Check Me Out, who won 14 of 16 in 2011. The most recent two-year-old trotting male to surpass 13 starts was Malabar Man, who won 13 of 15 races in 1996. “14 starts are a lot to give a two-year-old, but she was as good or better at the end than she was early,” Daley said. “She was never the prettiest-gaited horse. But she had a good attitude, a good head on her. I was very happy with the way her year progressed.”

Key, one of the Standardbred sport’s most influential breeders, most notably through his horse American Winner, passed Wednesday morning (Jan. 27), in Pennsylvania. Key bred American Winner in partnership with the late John Glesmann and the colt won the 1993 Hambletonian. As a sire, American Winner leaves a legacy through his daughter Yankee Blondie, the dam of Muscle Hill. American Winner was a son of Super Bowl and the Speedy Somolli mare BJs Pleasure. Key and Glesmann purchased BJs Pleasure as a yearling from breeder Lana Lobell Farms. The following year Lana Lobell sold her half-brother, Mack Lobell.
