Statesman Journal journalists honored SPJ, Best of Gannett awards

View Comments Several staff members of the Statesman Journal were honored in the Northwest Excellence in Journalism Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) for work published in 2020. This competition is one of the largest of its kind in the nation, honoring journalists across SPJ Region 10, which includes Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon. More than 3,000 entries were submitted in the contest that recognizes excellence in published or broadcast work. You can see the complete list of winners here. Statesman Journal awards in medium newsroom categories included:  Audio Series, 2nd Place, for the Explore Oregon Podcast reported and produced by editor David Davis and outdoors columnist Zach Urness.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Wednesday had two firsts for me and they both involved the Constitution. The first “first” was being called for jury duty and sitting for two hours in Noble Superior Court 1 as a prospective juror. I will tell you about my experience and what I learned about the Sixth Amendment in my next column.
