Residents are being urged to stay away from sick or dead birds after two swans in the Falmouth area were found to have been infected with avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. The bodies were collected by the Animal Plant Health Agency, an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Tests confirmed that both birds were infected with the H5N8 strain of the virus. Cornwall Council is working with Public Health England, DEFRA and other agencies to closely monitor the situation, however there is not believed to be any immediate risk to human health.
A campaign has been launched to provide hundreds of children across Cornwall with the kit they need to access online learning. There are more than 1,800 children in Cornwall without access to a computer or affordable data connection which means they risk falling behind in their education, especially during the Covid lockdown. This is despite more than 500 laptops being provided to Cornish schools by the Department for Education this month. Now the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Digital Skills Partnership (DSP) has teamed up with Newquay-based Crowdfunder, Cornwall Council and local businesses to launch the Kit4Kids campaign to help bridge the gap.

Devon is set to find out the outcome of the Government tier meeting yesterday.
The whole of the county, along with Plymouth which is treated separately, was placed into Tier 2 at the beginning of December.
Cornwall was one of the only places put into the Tier 1 category, along with the Isle of Wight.
Tier 1 restrictions mean people can mix in groups of six indoors, regardless of household. Pubs can also remain open even if they do not serve food.
