Wellness Awareness Week coming to Mineral County Barbara High Tribune Staff Writer KEYSER - Child abuse, drug addiction and living a healthier lifestyle will be among the topics examined during Wellness  Awareness Week April 19-23 in Mineral County. Hosted by the ONTRACK! Coalition to address issues that happen in our community, the event will consist of several webinars available for viewing, and also have experts on hand to answer questions. The event will also have a TikTok challenge and will run end on April 24 to coincide with National Drug Take Back Day. Dug Takes Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and health issue. Misused prescription stimulants, sedatives, and tranquilizers are of great concern, as most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family members and friends. This event provides and opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths by turning in old and used medications.

KHS announces 2021 Kelley nominees Liz Beavers Tribune Managing Editor KEYSER - Keyser High School has announced the three nominees for the 2021 Jonah Edward Kelley Award - Draetius Marcell Allen, Darrick Harmon Broadwater and Bradley Ryan Sommers. The Kelley Award is named in memory of Keyser High School graduate Jonah Edward Kelley, who lost his life while defending his men during an ambush near Kesternich, Germany, during World War II. Kelley was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions. Nominees for the award are three young men who have excelled academically and athletically, and have demonstrated integrity, dignity,  and honor throughout their high school careers. Nominees must also have played either football or basketball -  the two sports which Kelley played while a student at Keyser.

Health professionals seeing upswing in patients seeking mental health care Mineral Daily News-Tribune Tribune Staff Writer KEYSER - With the COVID pandemic ongoing, most people have had to deal with a lot of changes and difficult times over the past year. Many people are dealing with fear, anxiety, and stress. These conditions have affected the mental health of those individuals and can have damaging affects. Many health professionals say they have seen a large increase in those seeking mental health help, including in our area. Darren Wiley, licensed professional counselor and the clinical coordinator of Potomac Highlands Guild, says they are no exception. Wiley said they have seen a definite increase in those seeking help for their mental health.

Artist uses his talents to paint popular chicken at Eastern College

Artist uses his talents to paint popular chicken at Eastern College Mineral Daily News-Tribune MOOREFIELD – Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College’s eight-foot chicken statue was recently painted by local artist Kelson Thorne. The statue, named “Henrietta” by Eastern president Dr. Charles Terrell, was one of Kelson’s many recent mural projects completed over the summer and fall. The statue overlooks Corridor H on the north end of Eastern’s campus, welcoming travelers to the Poultry Capital of West Virginia.  Thorne is a graduate of West Virginia University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in painting in December 2019. He now works as a recovery specialist at the Potomac Highlands Guild.
