Letters: Opposition party leaders have let the nation down

THE Scottish election will surely go down in history as one of the most extraordinary results for a sitting government. A clear litany of failures, amongst them a once world-renowned education system in disarray. Add into the mix the two most prominent politicians in recent Scottish political history fighting like ferrets in a sack where one faced criminal charges and the other, the current First Minister, found by a parliamentary committee of having misled parliament. Therefore and unsurprisingly perhaps, the SNP put independence front and centre of its campaign rather than its failed domestic policies which simply do not stand up to the slightest level of scrutiny. Further, the eternal promise of independence and the land of milk and honey galvanised SNP support and made it a one-issue election.

Renfrewshire South seat not on ultra-secure list but SNP win probable

Winner in 2016: Tom Arthur (SNP) THE long-suffering town of Barrhead knows only too well what it’s like to be a left-wing enclave within a Tory constituency, due to its place within the East Renfrewshire local authority. However, it had a lucky escape from the calamity of being represented in the Scottish Parliament by Jackson Carlaw, thanks to the 2011 Holyrood boundary revision putting it in the Renfrewshire South constituency, where the Tories are essentially nowhere. They took just 11% of the vote in the seat in 2011 and even with the help of the Davidson surge in 2016 they only climbed to 16%. The sole threat to SNP incumbent Tom Arthur next week will therefore be Labour. However, that threat should not be taken too lightly, because the constituency was one of only 15 that Labour managed to retain when the SNP won their overall majority in 2011.

Sign Up Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham’s decision not to seek nomination as an SNP candidate for the 2021 Scottish Parliament elections has cast political minds back to her historic victory in a Westminster by-election 26 years ago. On May 25, 1995, in a by-election called following the death of sitting Tory MP Sir Nicholas Fairbairn, Ms Cunningham was first elected to represent the Perth and Kinross constituency where she turned a 2094 Conservative majority into a 7311 majority for the SNP. Her win was significant as the area had been staunchly Tory for most years since the 1920s.
