Christine Lynde says her community feels “powerless” despite being home to a nuclear plant that provides electricity to over 2 million Illinois homes.
Lynde is the president of the Byron School Board. She’s spent the last year signing witness slips and writing advocacy letters to lawmakers stressing urgency to save the plant.
“I m still optimistic, but I probably have never been more anxious about the legislature finishing or making good on a promise,” she said.
Exelon announced plans last summer to shutter that power station, and one in Dresden, this September. The billion-dollar energy giant just filed paperwork to deactivate one of the two cooling towers at the Byron facility.
Byron voters to decide on $41 million referendum in May
The referendum will be presented to voters in the form of two questions. If the first question is approved, $29.7 million will be provided for the school district. Byron voters will decide whether to approve a $41 million bond referendum for their school district in May.
The Byron School Board approved a motion to present the proposed referendum to voters during its Monday meeting. The board members approved it with a 6-1 vote. The special election will take place nearly a year to the day after Byron residents turned down a similar, slightly more expensive bond referendum.

BYRON, Minn. – A special school board meeting is scheduled on over $40 million in bond referendums.
The Byron School Board meeting Monday at 5:30 pm will consider setting a May 11 vote on two separate referendums.
The first would issue up to $29,700,000 in bonds for facility improvements like:
Accessibility and safety improvements at Byron High School.
Electrical, mechanical, and building updates and replacements at District Administration and Community Services building.
The addition and equipping of classrooms at Byron High School; updates to Byron High School and Byron Middle School athletic facilities.

(ABC 6 News) - Monday evening, the Byron School Board approved a plan to return to its base learning model beginning January 4.
According to Byron Superintendent Joey Page, grades K-5 will have in-person learning, while grades 6-12 will use the hybrid model.
Beginning the week of January 4, Fridays will be additional time for teachers to plan instruction and experience.
School-age child care during school hours will be provided to district-enrolled students age 12 and under who are children of Tier 1 Critical Workers. This child care service is ONLY to be provided when NO parent or guardian is at home due to employment as a critical worker.
