A letter from Abraham Lincoln that offers a window into his political ambitions is now part of the collection of the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
The letter was donated by Guy Fraker, a Lincoln collector and author. The 1854 letter reveals Lincoln’s decision to decline serving in the Illinois House of Representatives, just weeks after he was elected to a seat there… because holding that post would make him ineligible to run for the U.S. Senate. The letter also shows Lincoln’s concerns about staying with the Whig Party because of fear that it might adopt a radical platform that he could not follow. Although Lincoln failed in two bids for the Senate, his effort boosted his national profile and propelled him to the White House.
