One never knows where a Wednesday walk might lead. One could encounter Oopsie, the tiniest owl in Wisconsin, or bats. Walkers could learn to perfect their golf swing or find their way out of a corn maze.
Clever guides such as Rock County Parks Department Parks Foreman Jim Hessenaur, retired Milton High School science teacher David Bendlin and Rich Fletcher of Roam Around Tours will have plenty of stories about all the adventures.
âThey guide all these walks for free. This year, I have 21 walks, and half of them are with those guys, and they are the reason why people show up,â Mobility Manager for Rock County Council on Aging Jennifer McIlhone said.
BELOIT
Itâs difficult to stroll through Janesville or Beloit and not see multiple sculptures created by artist O.V. âVerneâ Shaffer.
In Janesville, his work can be seen at the Janesville Womanâs Club, One Parker Place, the downtown branch of BMO Harris Bank, Hedberg Public Library and Rotary Botanical Gardens.
Itâs also visible on the Beloit College campus, Beloitâs Riverside Park, Beloit Memorial Hospital and at many other sites in Beloit and throughout Wisconsin.
Shaffer died Feb. 16 in Princeton, Illinois, where he was born. He was 93.
âThis is the end of a legacy,â said Jerry Sveum, president of the Beloit Art Center Board of Directors. âHe has created more public art than any artist in Wisconsin.â
