BEMUS POINT “It’s amazing what students will do to see their principal kiss a pig.” That’s how Sonja DuBois, Bemus Point Elementary School principal, described a two-week effort to have students read for at least 60,000 minutes.
“It turns out that students will do pretty much anything, including a ton of reading,” added DuBois, who on Tuesday made good on a promise to kiss an actual pig as part of an incentive to encourage reading by students. “The students were so committed that they completed the objective of reading at least 60,000 minutes in less than two weeks.”

BEMUS POINT More than a dozen students who had been learning from home since September returned to Bemus Point Elementary School on Monday.
The return to in-person instruction was set into motion after the New York State Department of Health in mid-March updated its guidance for schools. Key, at least for the elementary school, was the state reducing the physical distance requirements between students from 6 feet to 3 feet. Further, schools are no longer required to utilize physical barriers, even when social distancing cannot be maintained.
Bemus Point Elementary School Teacher Named in Child Victims Lawsuit
A Bemus Point Elementary School teacher has been named in a pending child victims lawsuit for allegations of sexual abuse.
According to a petition filed in
Chautauqua County Supreme Court on Friday, the victim claims they were a student at Maple Grove High School when the abuse occurred. The teacher named in the case is Lori Conti.
Both the
Bemus Point Central School District, the Bemus Point School Board, as well as Conti, are being sued by the alleged victim. The victim is being represented by attorney Jerry Kristal of Buffalo.
