Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu has disclosed that he refused to put himself out to contest as Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament despite pressure from some party stalwarts to do so.
Mr Iddrisu made this revelation at a thanksgiving event held in honour of the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin in the Waala Traditional Area of the Upper West Region.
He told the congregation: “A group of NDC MPs led by Mahama Ayariga and some of our colleagues even surprisingly at that time supported by my able whip honourable Muntaka had come to my office to lure me and to encourage me to run for the position of Speaker and without any hesitation, I declined their bid.

Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin
The Ashanti Regional Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has congratulated Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin on his election as the new Speaker of Parliament.
Mr. Bagbin, Ghana’s longest-serving Parliamentarian, made history on Thursday, December 7, with his election as the Eighth Speaker and the first person from the opposition to be elected as a Speaker under Ghana’s Fourth Republican Constitution.
The contest saw the ruling party, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) nominee, Professor Mike Ocquaye, the immediate past Speaker of the Seventh Parliament, losing to the NDC’s nominee.
