Guiding the train of your life safely along the track | News, Sports, Jobs

Lifestyles Correspondent NIAGARA, Wis. A couple of weeks ago, I talked about April showers and the fact that everyone’s life gets rained upon once in a while. Today, I want to turn our attention to May flowers; the promised result of that rain. We have all heard the many sayings that have developed over the years as a way of encouraging us to take heart when life hands us an unexpected curve. Probably the most well known one is, “When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade.” My husband’s grandmother, a gem of a woman who came to this country from Luxembourg when she was 13 years old, gave me some sage advice when my husband and I were first married. She wisely counseled: “Life is a series of peaks and valleys. When you find yourself in a valley, take heart and know that a peak is on its way.”

Life – only time will tell what comes next | News, Sports, Jobs

Suzanne Killian NIAGARA, Wis. There were two instances in just this past week where I was reminded that my husband and I are definitely on the downward slope of our lives. We had been talking about how we wanted to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. I had always wanted to see Montana something about its nickname “Big Sky Country” has always intrigued me. I had heard about Whitefish from a friend with whom I used to work so, after reviewing their website, I ordered a guide from their visitor’s bureau. Recognizing the racism we likely harbor inside | News, Sports, Jobs

Lifestyles Correspondent NIAGARA, Wis. I have belonged to a book club since 2010; I joined one year after the group began and while I was still working. There are eight of us who meet once each month for eight months of the year. We call ourselves the Three B’s, which stands for Books, Brains and Bifocals we are all “of a certain age.” While we all share a love of books, enjoy discussing them and now are mostly retired, we come from different backgrounds and have had a variety of life experiences. We all bring different perspectives to our discussions.

Living the length and width of our lives | News, Sports, Jobs

Lifestyles Correspondent NIAGARA, Wis. A friend of mine recently posted on her Facebook page the following quotation by Diane Ackerman, “I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find I lived just the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.” The more I thought about that phrase, the more I liked it, so today I want to delve into its meaning and ponder how we can all go about living long and wide. While the secret to a long life lies in our genetic pool, there are certainly many other tools at our disposal to help us “live long and prosper” as Spock used to say on “Star Trek.” My husband and I are blessed with longevity that runs deep throughout both of our families. For him, the DeBruin side of the family has fared better than the Killian side. His father as well as many of his aunts and uncles had issues with various forms of cancer that shortened their lives. His maternal grandparents lived into their 80s and may have lived longer had it
