Michigan GOP effort to censure Upton, Meijer fails in committee Washington GOP U.S. Reps. Fred Upton and Peter Meijer avoided censure Wednesday by a Michigan Republican Party committee, which defeated the resolution by a 9-5 vote, the panel s chairman said. Upton of St. Joseph and Meijer of Grand Rapids Township were among 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump for his role in instigating the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.  The failed censure vote is the latest skirmish in a tug of war within the party that s pitted Trump loyalists against those denouncing his unproven claims that the presidential election was stolen.

February 23, 2021 Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad delivered his annual State of the City address Tuesday night, saying communities across the nation were greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and yet Benton Harbor continued to rise. Muhammad noted much progress has been made in the city when it comes to fixing streets, and that’s largely thanks to the city income tax. “If you ride down Union, if you ride down Broadway, if you ride down one of the worst streets that we had in the city of Benton Harbor, which was Emory, it is fixed today,” Muhammad said. Muhammad credited everyone who pays taxes in the city for fixing the streets. In a year that saw police violence and unrest dominate the national conversation, Muhammad noted the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety has a program to hire local.

A challenge that is circulating social media asking community members to buy locally has reached the Berrien County Commissioners’ office. At the December 10 meeting, Berrien County Commissioner Teri Freehling challenged her fellow commissioners to support local businesses by participating in the “Buy Local Berrien Challenge.” The challenge was recently announced by the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber. To participate, community members are asked to get take-out or purchase a gift card from a favorite small business currently impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. Then, community members are asked to post a photo of the take-out or purchase on their social media pages and in the Buy Local Berrien! Facebook group.
