Woman clung to branches fighting against floodwaters

Premium Content Subscriber only Firefighters pulled a woman to safety after a mistaken attempt to walk through flooded waters left her clinging to a tree branch. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Mackay city area commander Sven Diga said swiftwater rescue teams were called to Burkes Crossing on Pugsley St on Tuesday night to save the woman. Mr Diga said the woman had tried to cross a section of the creek, which was half a metre deep, when the current pulled her in. The woman was reportedly yelling for help as she clung to the trees only a few metres from where she was swept into the water.

  WATCH: Roads flooded at Walkerston after days of heavy rain in the Mackay region: Water is rushing under the Kirkup Bridge over the Peak Downs Highway at Walkerston. Flooding has also closed the road near Bourkes Crossing at Pugsley St to traffic.   BOM meterologist Rosa Hoff said it had been a wet and rainy silly season, with more than 200mm falling on some towns in just six days. Ms Hoff said Proserpine had the most rain, with 212mm since Christmas. Mackay recived 190.6mm, Clermont residents copped 105mm while Moranbah had 100mm since Friday December 25. The gloomy weather may have disrupted some residents holiday plans, but for farmers it was a blessing.
