Key barometers further extended losses and hit fresh intraday low in mid-morning trade. The Nifty regained the 14,400 mark after briefly slipping below that level. Investor sentiment was dented as Covid-19 cases continued to surge in the country.
At 11:28 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 1425.3 points or 2.87% at 48,166.69. The Nifty 50 index declined 426.40 points or 2.87% at 14,408.55.
The selling was broad based. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was down 4.46% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index declined 3.83%.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was weak. On the BSE, 456 shares rose and 2249 shares fell. A total of 169 shares were unchanged.
The domestic equity indices further extended losses in early afternoon trade. Investor sentiment was dented as Covid-19 cases continued to surge in the country. Barring the Nifty Pharma index, all the sectoral indices on the NSE were in the red.
At 12:20 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, tumbled 1691.68 points or 3.41% at 47,899.64. The Nifty 50 index lost 490.15 points or 3.30% at 14,344.70.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index skid 5.30% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index declined 4.79%.
The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 1,878 shares rose and 859 shares fell. A total of 150 shares were unchanged.

Volatility hit bourses in early trade as the key benchmark indices once again regained positive zone soon after reversing initial gains. At 9:25 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 150.62 points or 0.31% at 49,309.94. The Nifty 50 index was up 51.05 points or 0.35% at 14,688.85.
The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.7%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was up 0.58%.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, is strong. On the BSE, 1351 shares rose and 580 shares fell. A total of 85 shares were unchanged.

Maruti Suzuki India rose 0.58%. The company s total production jumped to 172,433 units in March 2021 from 92,540 units in March 2020. The production of passenger vehicles rose to 170,036 units in March 2021 compared with 91,602 units in March 2020. Production of light commercial vehicles surged to 2,397 units in March 2021 from 938 units in March 2020.
Oil and Gas stocks were trading in red, with the S&P BSE Oil&Gas index decreasing 24.13 points or 0.16% at 14779.73 at 13:49 IST. Among the components of the S&P BSE Oil&Gas index, Reliance Industries Ltd (down 0.92%), Castrol India Ltd (down 0.72%),Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (down 0.6%),Gujarat State Petronet Ltd (down 0.3%),Oil & Natural Gas Corpn Ltd (down 0.19%), were the top losers. Among the other losers were Indraprastha Gas Ltd (down 0.15%), and GAIL (India) Ltd (down 0.04%). On the other hand, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (up 0.5%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (up 0.28%), and Petronet LNG Ltd (up 0.13%) turned up.
At 13:49 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 51.02 or 0.1% at 49108.3.
Power stocks were trading in green, with the S&P BSE Power index increasing 17.45 points or 0.69% at 2561.15 at 09:49 IST. Among the components of the S&P BSE Power index, Adani Transmission Ltd (up 5.52%), Adani Power Ltd (up 4.98%), Adani Green Energy Ltd (up 2.98%), and Thermax Ltd (up 0.14%), were the top gainers. On the other hand, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (down 1.57%), NTPC Ltd (down 0.97%), and Torrent Power Ltd (down 0.97%) turned lower.
At 09:49 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 401.76 or 0.8% at 49628.07.
The Nifty 50 index was down 105.1 points or 0.71% at 14762.25.
The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was down 37.34 points or 0.18% at 21034.35.
