To say that globetrotting gastronome Andrew Zimmern is smitten with Birmingham’s food scene is an understatement.
He has featured the Magic City three times for his roving food shows on the Travel Channel, “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern” (2013), “Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations” (2016) and “The Zimmern List” (2018).

Whether tangy and sweet or thick and spicy, barbecue sauces are usually red. South Carolina’s leans orange from its signature mustard, while Kansas City’s sauce takes on a rust-like hue thanks to brown sugar or molasses. But Alabama’s regional sauce, with its white, creamy appearance, stands out from the crowd.
We have Big Bob Gibson, the pit master behind what became Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q in Decatur, Alabama, to thank for the convention-busting, and often overlooked, white sauce. It all began in 1925, when the 6-foot-four, 300-pound railway worker started smoking pork and chicken in hickory-fired brick pits on weekends. He served the meat on a makeshift table nailed to a sycamore tree in his backyard.
Decatur businesses to proceed with caution with masks

Apr. 4 Decatur business operators said they’re ready for the state mask mandate to end Friday, but most plan to encourage customers and staff to continue mask wearing, at least in the short term.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has said she’ll let the order requiring masks expire Friday.
“If Gov. Ivey drops the mask mandate, we’re not going to require masks to be worn,” said Charles Christopher, manager of Martin’s Family Clothing. “However, our associates will be wearing them for the time being. We’ll monitor other businesses and see how our customers react to any change. Presently, we encourage our customers to wear them. I believe most people are like me, we’re ready for most things to get back to normal.”
