The following is the commencement address of University of Maine valedictorian Bailey West of Stockton Springs:
Dear class of 2021, congratulations!
Our college years have been challenging to say the least, especially the past year. Graduating college is no small feat under any circumstances, let alone during a global pandemic.
Senior year did not look how we expected it: Zoom classes, the lack of crowds at sports games and traditions we typically enjoy, even this virtual commencement format. But we were creative and resilient, as were our professors and mentors who helped us adapt to these challenging circumstances.

ORONO University of Maine valedictorian Bailey West is impassioned by scientific research. She has been, in fact, since her days as a student at Searsport District High School.
West has been involved in research since high school, first with scientists at the Jackson Laboratory, MDI Biological Laboratory and Maine Medical Center, and then at UMaine with professor Dr. Julie Gosse.
At UMaine, West’s primary research, serving as her honors thesis project, has been in the toxicology lab under the instruction of Dr. Gosse studying an antibacterial chemical known as cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) which is used extensively in personal-care products. Stockton Springs grad, and University of Maine student Bailey West is among six Maine college students honored in 2021 for their civic engagement.
On April 28, Maine Campus Compact celebrated its 20th Annual Awards Ceremony virtually to recognize outstanding work in public service and civic engagement by Maine faculty, students, and community and corporate partners.
“During these unprecedented times, our award recipients positive impacts on campuses and in communities throughout the state reinforce the importance of the public purposes of higher education,” said MCC, in a news release.
Thirteen undergraduates have been named 2021 Outstanding Graduating Students at the University of Maine.

Melanie Berry of Morrill, Maine is the Outstanding Graduating Student in the University of Maine Division of Lifelong Learning. The Dexter native will receive a Bachelor of University Studies with a minor in psychology. Her numerous awards during her UMaine years include the Nontraditional Student Scholarship, the Alpha One Powering Education Scholarship and the Adult Degree Scholarship.
