Vermont Business Magazine 20 Southern Vermont Emerging Leaders were recognized on May 12th during day one of the Southern Vermont Economy Summit. Southern Vermont Young Professionals and the Shires Young Professionals sponsor the annual recognition event which celebrates young people from the Bennington and Windham regions. Individuals were nominated based on their work as community leaders and volunteers, and for their professional accomplishments and commitment to serving the region.
“Even though we had to do the recognition virtually this year, we had a massive increase in nominations,” said Sarah Lang of the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation, home to SoVTYPs. “Fifty-three outstanding young leaders were identified from which the final 20 were selected.” Locally-made gifts were provided by Better Wheel Works in Newfane.

A virtual summit will be held May 12, 13 and 14 to focus on rural resilience as Vermont emerges from the pandemic. The theme for this yearâs Southern Vermont Economy Summit is âReconnectâ â a time to reconnect with one another, and with efforts to build a brighter future for rural communities.
Three keynote speakers will share insights on how to build rural resilience from three perspectives: federal policy and investment, structural change in state agencies, and community-driven initiatives.
The summit opens with Tony Pipa, senior fellow of global economy and development at the Center for Sustainable Development at the Brookings Institution and author of the recent report âReimagining rural policy: Organizing federal assistance to maximize rural prosperity.â Pipa will discuss the new administrationâs approach to federal rural programs and funding.

Vermont Business Magazine Restoring downtown buildings was identified as a top priority during last year’s Rockingham community visit, led by the Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD). To sustain this momentum and address the need for small-scale development in downtown Bellows Falls, the Town of Rockingham sought help through BDCC’s Southern Vermont Economy Project (SVEP). BDCC identified the Incremental Development Alliance (IncDev) which provides technical assistance to transform development plans into tangible action.
Last fall, BDCC introduced local Rockingham partners to IncDev to see how they could help the town proceed. Redevelop Bellows Falls Buildings Task Force, Town of Rockingham, Village of Bellows Falls, Windham Regional Commission, Bellows Falls Area Development Corporation, Great Falls Regional Chamber of Commerce and others supported moving forward with IncDev.
