President Joseph R. Biden delivered a spark of hope in the early days of his presidency when he signed an executive order promising a government-wide approach to the disproportionate pollution burdens placed on the poor and communities of color.
The Pennsylvania Council of Churches, along with partner faith and environmental organizations, are encouraged by the president’s nod toward environmental justice. His order promises to reshape how the federal government works across its many agencies, acknowledging the intersection of policies and issues across communities, regions, and populations that necessitates an integration of efforts across the board. We hope it delivers.

When an angry mob of anti-government extremists carrying symbols of hate stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, it may have been a wake-up call for some but not for state Rep. Dan Frankel, a Democrat from Squirrel Hill.
Frankel is Jewish and represents a district that includes the Tree of Life synagogue, where 11 people were shot to death on Oct. 27, 2018. Even before that happened, Frankel was well aware of the damage hate speech can cause.
The shootings, however, were Frankel’s call to action.

For 75 years, the United Churches of Lycoming County has been bringing together area churches to serve the community. Sunday marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration of that achievement as they look ahead to the next challenges. The UCLC will kick off the celebration, which is titled “Shining Brightly Together,’ with an event livestreamed at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The featured speaker will be Bishop Barbara Collins, Upper Susquehanna Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, who will speak on “Shining Brightly Together: Be Strong and Courageous,” based on scripture from the first chapter of the Book of Joshua. Other events planned throughout the year begin with a week of prayer for Christian Unity to be held Jan. 18-25 as well as participating in the Martin Luther King Jr. v
