Transcatheter aortic valve implantation is approved in the United States for low-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis, without an age threshold. As the authors of a new review point out, though, much is still unknown about how youth can impact outcomes and future options.
Low risk and younger age are categories that should not be conflated, they urge. “The pivotal TAVR trials in low-risk patients have, so far, demonstrated excellent clinical outcomes. However, these results should be extrapolated to younger patients with caution.”
Toby Rogers, MD, PhD (MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Washington, DC, and National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD), who led the paper along with Charan Yerasi, MD (MedStar Washington Hospital Center), stressed a similar point to TCTMD.

The vast majority of experts who write and review some of the major clinical guidelines issued by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), including those for ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure, have financial conflicts of interest, according to a new analysis.
These entanglements, whether or not they affect the final product, could raise doubts among clinicians and patients that undermine the guidelines’ message, sources told TCTMD.
Breaking down the type of conflicts seen across the different ESC documents, receipt of a direct personal payment, either for industry-funded talks, consulting work, or payments for serving on an advisory board, a committee, or as a clinical investigator, largely outpaced payments made directly to the hospital or money for research funding.

After the all-male (and largely white) faculty lineup at the Heart Failure 2021 virtual meeting from Los Angeles drew ire on Twitter, organizers made swift changes.
Both program directors and all 23 speakers originally scheduled to lecture at the small subspecialty symposium March 12-13 are men. Gentleman, it s 2021 and there are soooooo many women in heart failure for this entire conference to be all men. Do better, Nasrien E. Ibrahim, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, tweeted on Wednesday with pictures of the then-current faculty list.
Ironically, Wednesday was also National Women Physicians Day.
Ibrahim called out the organizers for lack of effort, writing you didn t search hard enough. Others weren t so generous.
