In a historic move, India’s primary rescue outfit, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), has inducted over 100 women officials as disaster combatants and rescuers. The women personnel were deployed in Uttar Pradesh’s Garh Mukteshwar town on the banks of the river Ganga for contingency duties. The move is not only seen as a symbol of pride, but also one of gender sensitivity and inclusion, given that women are usually barred from taking up high-pressure jobs.
According to the NDRF Director General S N Pradhan, the women officials possess all the skills to be called complete rescuers. In an interview, he added that while the NDRF can deploy an all-woman team or a squad of male and female personnel to respond to situations, having women personnel on-ground makes a great difference as women’s skill sets are stronger in some aspects, and they can be leveraged in situations where women, children and aged people are being rescued.
