Eagle-eyed traffic wardens patrolling south Essex streets up to 50 years ago

Betty Morriss started work as Basildon’s inaugural traffic warden on June 29, 1970. Traffic wardens had been around in the UK since the 1960s, when the first batch of uniformed parking enforcement officers marched onto the streets of Westminster. The first penalty charge ever issued in England was given to a doctor who was answering an emergency call to help a heart attack victim in a London hotel. He was eventually let off the £2 fine following a public outcry. We have rediscovered some snaps of Basildon and Southend’s wardens looking for illegally parked vehicles from the 1970s through to the 1990s.

Canvey Paddocks Centre: Sailing club to be sold for £5m plans

A FORMER sailing club will be sold off to pay for a controversial community centre plan, amid fears the site could be used for homes. Castle Point Council bosses are hoping to sell the land of Chapman Sands Sailing Club, Eastern Esplanade, Canvey to fund the new £5million Paddocks Community Centre and replace the existing centre in Long Road on the island. But campaigners, former club bosses and opposition councillors have hit out at the Tory-led council. Bill Gosnold, secretary of the now closed club which run for 52 years, said he’s disappointed. He said: “It feels like this council just wants to destroy communities at a time when we should be pulling together.
