100 years of Satyajit Ray: How relevant is the maestro today?

- Martin Scorsese ‘‘Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon.’’ - Akira Kurosawa One is an American master and the maker of timeless Hollywood classics like ‘Taxi Driver’ or ‘Goodfellas,’ the other the Japanese auteur who is regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century. West Bengal Assembly Elections 2021: Surge in Covid cases prompt Jalpaiguri officials to draw up new plans for May 2

The nationwide spike in Covid-19 cases has prompted officials of the Jalpaiguri district administration to draw up new plans to curb the spread of the contagion at the district’s three counting centres. On May 2, along with the rest of the state, votes of seven Assembly constituencies of the district would be counted in these centres. “Keeping in mind the current scenario, we have made some new plans to minimise the risk of infection in all the three counting centres,” said Moumita Godara Basu, the district magistrate of Jalpaiguri. “In each centre, sanitisation would be carried out every hour. Alarms would be installed to remind the concerned staff that they need to sanitise the counting centre premises. Also, it has been decided that transparent plastic sheets would be put in between seats at the centre where counting personnel, agents of political parties and officials would be present,” she said.

It was two weeks ago that I felt feverish after a well-rested weekend. I wanted to, and halfway did, convince myself that it was a case of Monday blues. I didn t want to get out of bed. To be honest, just sit up and switch my laptop on for work, because that s life now. I feared it was coronavirus, but wasn t ready to accept it just yet. For more than a year, I had been successful at safeguarding myself from it. Maybe I did catch it at some point, but it never got to a point where I felt the need to get tested, to try and re
