Activist Poughkeepsie MLK Event Is Held Virtually

3:53 The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March for Social and Economic Justice in Poughkeepsie began in 1996 and became an annual activist event until a few years ago. This year, during COVID-19, it was held virtually, and hosted by one of the original organizers former Dutchess County Legislator Joel Tyner. Tyner resigned in Janaury 2019 amid sexual harassment allegations and then moved across the country. Yet Zoom brought together some of the usual participants. That’s folk singer Pat Lammana, who credited the song. “So this song was written by David Heitler-Klevans,” Lammana says. “I think it’s a song that Dr. King would’ve liked if he had heard it, but it was written long after he passed.”

SCLC Hosts Amazing MLK Jr. Day Car Parade In Tuscaloosa

SCLC Hosts Amazing MLK Jr. Day Car Parade In Tuscaloosa SCLC Hosts Amazing MLK Jr. Day Car Parade In Tuscaloosa  Today, in Tuscaloosa and all over the nation, we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Beulah Baptist Church served as the meetup place for dozens of cars this morning as we prepared to celebrate Dr. MLK Jr. with a car parade. The Tuscaloosa Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference hosted this car parade which is usually a march. Due to COVID-19, they made a minor adjustment to the annual event. It was great to see Tuscaloosa community members out in their cars ready for the parade. Of course 105.1 The Block was ready in our station vehicle as well as our sister station 92.9 WTUG! It felt good to see members of the Tuscaloosa County Chapter of NPHC out representing their organizations and I spotted the T-Town Freedom Marchers and community leaders out ready to celebrate Dr. King.

Tuscaloosa Chapter of the SCLC to Host Virtual Unity Day

Tuscaloosa Chapter of the SCLC to Host Virtual Unity Day Each year, the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference commemorates the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday with what has been coined as Unity Day. This event, held on MLK Day, normally begins with a breakfast at Beulah Baptist Church.  For a small donation, attendees enjoy a meal and fellowship while enjoying greetings and words from numerous civic leaders and elected officials in addition to musical selections, award presentations, and an address by a notable speaker. After the breakfast, there is a march from MLK Elementary to Tuscaloosa City Hall, where Mayor Maddox addresses the crowds, attending churches and organizations are recognized, and the community joins together in prayer.

The program will provide youth with life and job skills, educational and employment opportunities, and many resources including resources to address mental health issues. The City of Poughkeepsie Police have been analyzing trends among violent crimes among our youth, and this is an attempt to mitigate the violence through community collaboration. The goal of the program is to bring juveniles together with available and necessary resources that can lower and possibly eliminate at-risk juveniles with criminal consequences. How Black churches survived 2020

How Black churches survived 2020 Curtis Bunn Black churches have certainly not been spared from the incalculable loss from the coronavirus pandemic. Churches have long been a haven for Black communities, as places for spiritual nourishment, social connection, community organizing. But with the pandemic hitting Black populations disproportionately, communities are reeling from the loss of pastors and other faith leaders. The deaths have tested churches resolve while expanding their imagination about how to function during and, eventually, after the pandemic. Covid-19 for the Black church has been devastating, said the Rev. Eric George Vickers, lead pastor of the historic Beulah Baptist Church in Atlanta. Church is community for us. It s the place for spiritual guidance, social awareness, home training, encouragement, you name it. The loss this year can t be properly explained or expressed. It can only be experienced.
