Tiospaye receives budget exemption for Wacipi

Tiospaye Student Council received a budget exemption for their annual Wacipi at this week’s SGA meeting. The Tiospaye Student Council petitioned SGA to appeal the vote from last week to deny the budget exemption.  “In previous years, SGA has been generous in giving us this exemption,” Tiospaye President Julianna Benge said. “With the knowledge that we have gained in the past week and looking at budgets, we are requesting to exempt four thousand of our allocated funds given for fiscal year 21 through 22 to use for Wacipi payouts.” Tylar Larsen, Tiospaye vice president, said USD felt like home to him, which was solidified after attending the 47th Wacipi.

Harvard Overseer Prospects' Views | Harvard Magazine

Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons/ Caroline Culler In light of the importance of the annual election for members of Harvard’s Board of Overseers and heightened interest stemming from last year’s vigorously contested results and the possibility of a similar contest this year Harvard Magazine is providing enhanced coverage. We asked each candidate presented by the HAA nominating committee and each member of the Harvard Forward slate seeking a place on the ballot by petition to answer these questions: • What are the most important challenges facing the University and what are its most significant opportunities? • What is the Board of Overseers’ role in Harvard’s response to those challenges and in its efforts to realize those opportunities?

Pandemic puts college degree out of reach for more South Dakotans

Editor’s note: This is Part 2 of a three-part series. The COVID-19 pandemic has further lowered the ability of low-income and minority students in South Dakota, including Native Americans, to enroll in college, obtain a degree and gain the lifelong financial and upward mobility benefits that come with higher education. Education experts in South Dakota and around the country are increasingly worried that the COVID-19 pandemic has further expanded the long-standing educational achievement gap in which higher-income and white students do significantly better on standardized tests and in gaining access to higher education than students from lower-income and minority families.
