The nation’s insecurity is worsening, the challenges are humongous, and the solutions have been elusive so far. The recent escalation of clashes between security agencies and local insurgents in the South East, have heightened the calls for Government to urgently rethink its strategies for combatting the security challenges in Eastern Nigeria and other hotspots like Benue State, where there are killings almost on a daily basis. The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, was not left out, as there was an attempt to assassinate him earlier this year in March, while seven internally displaced persons taking refuge in a Camp in Abagena, Makurdi were murdered last week. Policemen and other security personnel, have also not been spared, as several of them have lost their lives in the violence. The process of restructuring is simple: We should look at our Constitution, agree on what we do not like in it and replace these with what we like. The reality in Nigeria has been that at the emotive level, everything that is wrong or disliked has been reduced to the refusal of the state to restructure. Restructuring can therefore only lead to happiness.
On June 30, 2017, my column was entitled, “No Need to Fight: Restructuring is the basis of Happiness.” In it I urged the government to establish and accelerate a process to meet the demands for political restructuring in Nigeria, which has been on the front burner for decades. We read a story in one of our secondary school English textbooks about a time machine.
