Tomato grower president on labor shortage and future of indoor farming
When Chuck Tryon took over as president of Owatonna-based Bushel Boy Farms in early October 2020, the U.S. was still a couple of months away from an approved Covid-19 vaccine. Like virtually every business at the time, Bushel Boy faced a great deal of uncertainty. But that’s not just because of the pandemic. A more pressing concern? A shortage of workers to staff Bushel Boy’s tomato greenhouses in Greater Minnesota and Iowa.
“Farm labor in the U.S. is a challenge, whether you’re indoors or outdoors,” Tryon said in a recent interview with TCB. “It does cause daily challenges.”
The world s largest grain bin taking shape among the North Iowa landscape
The new bin at Golden Grain Energy will be able to hold about 2.2 million bushels of corn, and will be able to provide about 30 days worth of storage.

MASON CITY, Iowa - The south side of town has been flourishing, with the construction of Bushel Boy s new facility as well as Waste Management s new regional facility on what was once farmland. Now, a project of monumental size is underway at Golden Grain Energy.
Construction on what will be the world s largest grain bin upon completion began in September. The bin will be able to hold over 2.2 million bushels of corn, will be about 165 ft. in diameter, and will stand 155 ft. tall over the North Iowa landscape. To put it in perspective, it would take roughly 2,200 trucks to fill the inside of the bin, and a Boeing 767 could fit inside (if stood on end) and still have room. T
