Editorial: The Great Fire of 1901, the possibilities for Jacksonville 120 years later
Our view
The redevelopment of downtown began 120 years ago today when the Great Fire of 1901 razed the city.
Jacksonville was a very different city in 1901. It was the largest city in Florida with a population of about 28,000, half of whom were Black. It was a major destination for winter tourists, who arrived on Henry Flagler’s new railroad. People crossed the river on ferries or private boats.
On May 3, 1901, in a matter of hours, the fire destroyed 2,368 buildings covering 146 city blocks. It displaced 10,000 residents and killed seven. The disruption to lives and businesses makes the pandemic look like a cakewalk.
