Jacksonville was a very different city in 1901. It was the largest city in Florida with a population of about 28,000, half of whom were Black. It was a major destination for winter tourists, who arrived on Henry Flagler’s new railroad. People crossed the river on ferries or private boats. On May 3, 1901, in a matter of hours, the fire destroyed 2,368 buildings covering 146 city blocks. It displaced 10,000 residents and killed seven. The disruption to lives and businesses makes the pandemic look like a cakewalk.
