U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, sent a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas urging the Biden Administration to re-designate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). In their letter, the Senators cite the importance of reinstating protection to eligible Haitians in the United States that are unable to return safely to their homeland due to a compounding set of devastation from national disasters, political unrest, and extraordinary conditions facing the island.
“While the Government of Haiti has been able to receive limited numbers of Haitian nationals removed from the United States, it lacks the capacity to provide the needed reception and care for tens of thousands of returnees,”

Hong Kong Safe Harbor Act. This bipartisan legislation would ensure those Hong Kongers who peacefully protested Beijing’s corrupt justice system, and have a well-founded fear of persecution, are eligible for Priority 2 Refugee status. The bill is in response to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) draconian national security law, the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
