Wed, 04/21/2021 LAWRENCE From across the country, college and university presidents of Campus Compact member institutions have nominated promising student leaders as Newman Civic Fellows. Through service, research and advocacy, these fellows have demonstrated an investment in their community and are working to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change. Radhia Abdirahman, a junior in human biology, global & international studies and African & African diasporic languages, is KU’s Newman Civic Fellow for 2021-2022. She is from Overland Park and Vancouver, British Columbia, and a graduate of Tamanawis Secondary School. As a Somali-Muslim woman with an innate desire to help those around her, Abdirahman brings a unique outlook and perspective to service and community engagement.

Savannah Hays MORGANTOWN A first-generation college student from Parkersburg has been named the West Virginia University 2021 Newman Civic Fellow. Savannah Hays aspires to become a physician-researcher and will use her role to undertake a year-long project to increase access to engineering mentorships for young women in West Virginia. Hays is an Honors biomedical engineering major in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources will help form at least two SWENext chapters, the high school equivalent of the Society of Women Engineers, to serve young women ages 13-17. “I am so passionate about this project because I am from West Virginia and I want to see our state succeed,” Hays said. “Our state and university have the resources for students to excel as engineering students, but I think many young women are steered away from this male-dominant field. UMA-Rockland s Celena Zacchai named 2021-2022 Newman Civic Fellow

(Photo courtesy University of Maine at Augusta) Campus Compact, a Boston-based nonprofit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced the 212 students who will make up the organization’s 2021-2022 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows, including the University of Maine at Augusta’s own Celena Zacchai. This year’s cohort includes students from 39 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico. Celena Zacchai is a UMA Social Science major, who attends many classes at the UMA Rockland Center. In addition to being recognized as a Newman Civic Fellow, Zacchai was also selected as a 2020 Maine Policy Scholar, researching the topic of the Role of Maine State Policy in Increasing Access to Affordable Housing for Maine Seniors. At UMA’s 2020 Convocation Ceremony, she delivered the student perspective on the year’s academic theme of “Outbreak” and in 2019, she was honored as a UMA Rising Scholar.

Academics Campus & Community March 4, 2021 Two students from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University have been named Newman Civic Fellows by Campus Compact, a Boston-based nonprofit organization working to advance the public purpose of higher education. CSB’s Faith Gronda and SJU’s Fabian Venegas-Ramos are part of the organization’s 2021-22 cohort of 212 students from 39 states, Washington, D.C. and Mexico. The Newman Civic Fellowship is a year-long program for students from Campus Compact member institutions. The students selected are leaders on their campuses who demonstrate a commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing communities, and are nominated by their presidents or chancellors.
