WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - It was a case that came as a shock to many across the Cape Fear region. A well-known police lieutenant and youth football coach, criminally charged following an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). The accusation: that Shaun Appler offered a woman a âfree passâ to get out of trouble with Wrightsville Beach Police, in exchange for nude photos or sex.
Two men pleaded guilty Thursday in a 2018 Wilmington homicide case after initially trying to blame the fatal shooting on a 15-year-old.
Brandyn Queen, a 20-year-old Wilmington resident, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder after he shot and killed Tomar Bloodsworth on May 8, 2018, according to a press release from the New Hanover County District Attorney s Office. Queen was sentenced to 10-to-13 years in prison.
His co-defendant Devontae Mitchell, 21, also pleaded guilty Thursday. He was sentenced to 3-to-4 years for accessory after the fact to second-degree murder for lying to police about who shot and killed Bloodsworth, according to the release.
Mitchell and Queen met up with Bloodsworth to purchase marijuana. When an argument began, Queen shot Bloodsworth with a .22 caliber handgun, according to the release. Bloodsworth returned fire and was taken to the hospital by a driver, and died later of one gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Jordan Kita, a former New Hanover County Sheriff s Office deputy who was terminated for his alleged involvement in an armed incident, is halfway through his trial.
Kita, 24, is accused of leading an armed group that showed up at the wrong house in Pender County looking for his missing sister.
Kita is charged with forcible trespass, breaking and entering, and willful failure to discharge duties.
According to the New Hanover County District Attorney s Office, the first half of the trial was completed in December, but was sidelined by COVID when the second half of the trial was set to take place. Further details about why the trial was paused were not immediately available.
