Fight over returning to school in June could lead to legal battle between N.J. district, union
Updated May 13, 2021;
The dispute in Paterson over requiring teachers to return to classrooms on June 1, one week before a limited number of students would arrive, is not letting up.
School district officials in the state’s third-largest city say sufficient coronavirus safety protocols will be in place. The teachers’ union is citing purported shortfalls observed by educators on building walk-throughs last month in arguing for keeping the buildings closed for the remainder of the school year.
Both sides are awaiting a ruling on an unfair labor complaint filed by the teachers’ union with the New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission.

About 9 percent of students in the Paterson school district are being given the option of returning to classrooms for the final two weeks before the 2021 summer break.
The reopening plan approved Wednesday night by the school board applies to only 2,318 of the 24,588 students in Paterson, according to the district’s spokesperson.
Under the plan, a total of 2,100 special education students in grades pre-K through 12, and 218 students in English Language Learners newcomers programs at Public School No. 15 and the New Roberto Clemente School, will be allowed to return to classrooms on June 8. That’s two weeks before the final day of classes.

PATERSON, NJ – A large group of district educators and administrators have more than just their love of teaching in common. They are also veterans of the United States military services and they are featured in a new video produced by the university that is aimed at attracting more veterans to public education. Many of the district’s teachers who appear in the video are William Paterson University (WP) alumni.
The video, called Veterans In the Classroom, was a collaborative effort between WP’s College of Education and its Office of Veteran and Military Affairs. The interviews with the district staff were conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic.
