NEW HAVEN Jimmy “Shoes” Millen is closing his
Austin-Phillips Shoe Co. store a city staple of 92 years due to illness.
And it’s emotional because he’s loved catering to customers, especially those with wide feet, bunions, corns, arch troubles and other foot challenges.
“I liked that it was a person-to-person business taking care of other people’s problems no matter what it took, even if we had to send them to the competition,” Millen said. “It was like being a cheap doctor with no education.”
