Over 70% of commercial broadcasters in Japan said they had no women in executive positions, a labor union survey showed Monday, highlighting the male-dominated leadership of the mass media industry.

Over 70 percent of commercial broadcasters in Japan said they have no women in executive positions, a labor union survey showed Monday, highlighting the male-dominated leadership of the mass media industry.
Of the total of 1,797 executives at 127 commercial broadcasters, only 2.2 percent, or 40, were female, according to the first such survey conducted in the year through March by the Japan Federation of Commercial Broadcast Workers Unions, with its umbrella organization calling for increased female representation in the sector.
Commercial broadcasters must face this reality and improve gender balance, the Women s Conference of Commercial Broadcasting, under the wing of the federation, said in a statement, adding that such imbalance affects news coverage and content. ....

Japan Minister Vows Thorough Probe into Fuji Media Scandal

Tokyo, April 6 (Jiji Press) Japanese communications minister Ryota Takeda said Tuesday that his ministry will conduct a thorough investigation into Fuji Media Holdings Inc. over its suspected violation of a foreign ownership rule under the broadcasting law in the past.
We ll take appropriate steps after thoroughly examining the issue on the basis of the results of the investigation, Takeda told a press conference.
Takeda also said that the ministry plans to ask all certified broadcasting holding companies and broadcasters to confirm whether they are complying with the foreign ownership rule.
Fuji Media, which has Fuji Television Network Inc. and other broadcasters under its wing, said Monday that it made errors in counting voting rights between 2012 and 2014. It may have breached the foreign ownership rule as a result. ....
