Growing up in Corpus Christi, Nick Perez delighted in drawing dresses in the empty corners of notebook paper even getting in trouble in class for doing so.
The self-taught designer and makeup artist behind the fashion brand Nicó, gave up sketching by middle school, bowing to what Perez describes as societal standards for what a boy
is. But by high school, Perez, who uses pronouns they/them, became more comfortable embracing themself and enrolled in a sewing class that set the course Perez is on today. “I kind of just fell in love with teaching myself how to drape, teaching myself how to actually understand how to make dresses and, yeah, the rest is history,” they say.
