READERS have responded after opposition was raised to another adult gaming arcade in Carlisle. Recently, plans were submitted to the city council for the change of use of the former betting shop, 94-96 English Street, which closed in December. The applicant is listed as the Birkenhead-based operator, Kings Betting Centre. It follows proposals, submitted in November, for another arcade at 70-72 English Street which is still being considered by the council. According to the latest design and access statement: “The machines offer low stakes ranging from 10p to a maximum of £2 and the average stake in an Adult Gaming Centre is between 30p to 50p.

Blakemore said it had an ‘increased capacity to change’
Strong sales across convenience have helped AF Blakemore mitigate the impact of the pandemic across its foodservice and wholesale distribution divisions, it has said.
The business remained in a strong position, said chairman Peter Blakemore, as he reported results for the year to April 2020.
His optimism came despite total sales for the year falling 7.2% from £1.14bn to £1.05bn.
That was partly attributed to the early impact of the crisis, which began at the tail end of the reporting period, and the knock-on impact of its exit from the cash & carry sector in 2018.
