Nothing gets me going quite like the smell of smoked meats: ribs, brisket, chicken, you name it.
Sunday is National Barbecue Day, part of May’s National Barbecue Month, which honors barbecue in general (burgers and dogs on the grill, etc.), but here we’re talking traditional Southern barbecue, one of my three desert island foods, along with doughnuts and wings.
Back in 2015, I proclaimed that New Jersey is a barbecue wasteland. The outlook has improved slightly since then; there’s great barbecue in New Jersey, you just have to know where to look.

You could argue that delis are New Jersey’s greatest culinary treasure. Italian delis, Jewish delis, Polish delis, delis of all shapes and sizes populate the Garden State. Delis have it all: sandwiches, wraps, burgers, breakfast, salads, soups and so much more.
If your town does not have a deli, maybe you should consider moving?
We did not include places that are predominantly sub/hoagie shops, concentrating on delis that go beyond sub/hoagies to include sandwiches and dishes of all types. The entries are marked PG for Pete and JS for Jeremy, so you know who wrote what.

Cheryl Ernst is eying her last day behind the counter of Mr. Bill’s, an iconic South Jersey roadside burger joint.
“I think Sunday will be my last day,” she said. “The sale is supposed to close by April 12.”
Ernst is selling the eatery that has been a favorite pitstop since the 1950s for travellers to the Jersey Shore. She and her late husband John reopened Mr. Bill’s five years ago after it had gone out of business for three years.
