Candidates to get a longer election cycle

BARTLETT — Candidates for town and school offices will have more time to campaign this election season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While voting normally takes place in non-SB2 towns on the second Tuesday in March, selectmen in Bartlett plan to take advantage of Gov. Chris Sununu’s Emergency Order No. 83, which allows towns this year to push back town voting and town meetings to as late as July. Bartlett Selectmen Gene Chandler, Vicki Garland and Gus Vincent voted unanimously Feb. 3 to move the election of officers from March 9 to May 11 at the Glen Fire Station, and to have the annual town meeting on May 13 at the Josiah Bartlett Elementary School.

2020 Year in Review — the year in quotes

Quote of the Week “My motto is the opposite of Michelle Obama’s. If the president goes low, I’m going to go lower.” — Republican presidential candidate William Weld, while signing the lower door of the refrigerator at The Conway Daily Sun on Jan. 2, 2020. “I don’t think anybody who runs for mayor in America, thinks, ‘You know, do two terms, and then it’s right to the White House. At least not in the city like mine.” — Democratic presidential candidate Peter Buttigieg during an editorial board at The Conway Daily Sun on Jan. 3. “They had a little woodpile for protection. That’s about it.”— Ossipee Police Chief Joe Duchesne, describing his officers’ lack of protection during a recent shootout. He asked for $27,000 from town voters to buy body armor for his force on Jan. 14.

Pappas hears ski industry's winter outlook

CONWAY — Get ready for a big winter season, with people affected by the pandemic flocking to ski, snowshoe and snowmobile in the White Mountains, much as they did hiking and biking this summer. That was the message U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas (D-Manchester) heard from local recreation and ski industry leaders during a Zoom roundtable discussion Wednesday. Taking part were Jessyca Keeler, executive director of Ski New Hampshire, based in Conway; Ben Wilcox, general manager and president of Cranmore Mountain Resort of North Conway; Ellen Chandler, executive director of the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation; Tyler Ray of the Granite Outdoor Alliance and Granite Backcountry Alliance; and Peter Gagne of Northenr Extremes Snowmobiles of Bartlett.
