Bellator returns this week with an excellent headliner, featuring a title fight at the top and a bevy of familiar names and some very competitive matchups. Not only that, but the light heavyweight tournament continues in the race to the million dollar prize.
As of late, it feels as if Bellator matchmaking has become far more balanced and sensible. The product as a whole appears to be much more narrowly focused and the fights end up being less haphazardly put together.
All things considered, we end up with a tidy card that has less clutter and a fair amount of action that leads in interesting directions. And there’s major consequences to this one, primarily with the title fight at the top. Juan Archuleta (25-2) finally reached the pinnacle to become Bellator champ, and now he’ll be defending his title against Sergio Pettis (20-5).

It can be difficult to live in the shadow of a relative whose success exceeds your own. In the NBA, Stephen Curry’s success has long since surpassed his father Dell’s achievements despite him having played three less seasons to this point.
In the MMA universe, the younger sibling has often found more fame. Case in point, Nate Diaz. The younger of the Diaz brothers, he gets more attention and hoopla than his older brother Nick whenever he fights.
Then, there Sergio Pettis. He is six years younger than his well-known brother Anthony, and he is finally reaping the benefits of the spotlight. He is in the prime of his career at the age of 27. While Sergio hasn’t become the lightweight champion for two different major organizations like his brother, he now has the chance to become a bantamweight titleholder for Bellator when he challenges Juan Archuleta at Bellator 258.
Maryland’s own Shogun Fights held its 18th event from the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore on Saturday, April 14, with a card that featured 10 bouts and three title fights.
In the main event, Tucker Lutz became the undisputed Shogun Fights featherweight champion after defeating Francisco Isata in a bout that featured a little bit of everything – including multiple eyepokes, a groin shot and hard-hitting strikes from both competitors. However, Lutz also mixed in some takedowns with his arsenal to become champion. In the co-main event, flyweight champion Greg Fischer successfully defended his belt against Blaine Shutt by exercising his ground game and locking in a rear-naked choke and putting Shutt to sleep.
