When Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Tate Reeves of Mississippi both rescinded statewide mask mandates this week and declared their states were reopening at full capacity, the news caught live music venues in both states off-guard. It also left them with a decision to make: follow their governors’ rosy decrees or maintain the Covid-19 safety protocols they’ve had in place for months.

Not many bands have the benefit of having their origin story recorded on film for posterity by a documentarian. Cases are fewer still where said documentarian puts down the camera (or at least sets it on a tripod) midway through the process so he can actually join the band. This was all the case, though, when the country group Midland came together in 2014. That footage has been put together for a forthcoming documentary, “Midland: The Sonic Ranch,” as well as a soundtrack album that compiles the tracks the group laid down in those very first formative sessions.

Thomas Rhett will return to the concert stage in front of a live audience for three socially-distanced shows at Billy Bob’s, the Fort Worth, Texas, honky-tonk. Rhett’s full-band gigs are set for May 6th through 8th and follow five shows by Miranda Lambert at the venue.
“Man, it feels good to say this,” Rhett wrote in announcing the concerts on Instagram. “We are able to do these very special shows because capacity will be limited and socially distanced, and Billy Bob’s will have strict Covid protocols in place.”

Mike and the Moonpies had just finished their gig at Antone’s in Austin last Thursday when the city began to freeze. The country band had plans to rendezvous at their producer’s studio in Wimberley, about 45 minutes southwest, to work on a new album.
All five Moonpies, along with their tour manager and merchandise seller, made it, but conditions quickly deteriorated over the weekend throughout much of the state of Texas. A sold-out show they had scheduled for Saturday in Luckenbach was scrapped, and soon the power at the compound went out. A frozen valve at their well pump robbed them of running water.
