Remembering the Yankees' longest winning streaks in team history

Photo by: Diamond Images/Getty Images On April 8th, the A’s were in disarray. The defending AL West champions had been embarrassed by the rival Astros in a four-game sweep in Oakland to start the season, and after narrowly avoiding another sweep at the hands of the Dodgers with an extra-inning win on April 7th, they’d lost to Houston again. They were 1-7 and looked absolutely lost . until they weren’t. They won on April 9th. Then again on April 10th. As a matter of fact, they just kept winning until the Orioles finally cooled off their bats on Sunday in an 8-1 victory. Before that, the A’s had compiled a 13-game winning streak, their longest since the “Moneyball” A’s went on their incredible 20-game run in 2002 (the American League record until Cleveland rode 22 in a row in 2017). It was something to behold, as were those other two longer, more legendary runs.

From Kobe Bryant to Diego Maradona, a year of staggering losses in sports

From Kobe Bryant to Diego Maradona, a year of staggering losses in sports 29 Dec, 2020 07:15 PM 9 minutes to read There were so many this year. Sports in 2020 was an unending state of mourning. It was as if every week, sometimes days, another luminary fell, bringing a cascade of condolence and remembrance. It began New Year s Day, a harbinger of what the year held, with the deaths of David Stern and Don Larsen. Not long after came a seismic jolt, the helicopter crash of Kobe Bryant in the fog-shrouded California hills that reverberated across sports and across continents. Deep into the year, a bookend to Bryant, Diego Maradona died from a heart attack in Argentina weeks after brain surgery, the waves of grief rippling across football. It seemed a whole wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame was ripped away - Al Kaline, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford, Joe Morgan, Phil Niekro. American Football lost a big piece of its heart: Don Shula, Gale Sayers, Paul Hornung, Bobby
